On 6th of November 1999 I performed at the Densites 99 Festival in Verdun, France with Olivier Paquotte on bass and Peter Hollinger on drums. (This trio became the group No Plan) It was a first meeting of sound organized by the festival. It felt "right" from the initial chord smash to the last. It happens that way sometimes, and Saturday was one of those nights. Click photo to see it enlarged.
This is the group from the festival in Verdun. From left to right Peter

This is a live shot as we rip through a great set at the Densites Festival 11/6/99
RA with German Drummer Paul Lovens. Paul is a great drummer with a unique sound,
who is engaging to watch perform.
End of the festival party with French clarinetists Isabelle Duthoit. Wish I had
a tape of her performance on Friday night with Laurent Dailleau on theremin and David Chiesa on contra bass.

It was fun to play music and have some laughs with old and new friends in
Verdun. But I couldn't stop thinking if I might see a ghost. Between seven hundred
thousand and one million (nobody knows the exact number, see my link to the
battle of Verdun) people
lost their lives in and around the Battlefields of Verdun in 1916. To this day
walking through the battlefields you can still find human bones. It's
dangerous going because the fields are littered with live bombshells that can sometimes spontaneously explode. This happened a few weeks ago near the home of the organizers of the festival.
War is Madness!
Steve Buchanan writes: dear Ron, just a little trivia about the final push at Verdun.
I don't know if you know this so...the preparatory bombardment from the Germans
lasted 72 hours and it is estimated that at least 1 million rounds were fired!
Not surprising that shells still explode, as for causalities however the Somme
river valley is surely more atrocious with an estimate of 2 and a half million
lives lost and who knows how many wounded and all of this with just 800 yards to
maximum 1 and a half mile gain on either side over a three year period and all
with no real military objective the whole time! Maybe madness is to light a
phrase for that.
A few days later on the 9th I played again with Oliver and this time with Camel Zekri on acoustic guitar and electronics at Les Instants Chavires in Paris. This gig was really Magic for me. The music took us to Africa and back to Paris and then out to Space.

I hope to do some recording and more concerts with both of these groups of great musicians next year.
